  GD DSC_4284.JPG - Two QF-4E Phantom IIs fly in formation after making a low-approach to the runway at Tyndall AFB, FL. on 17 Nov. 2008. Both aircraft are assigned to the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron (ATRS), 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group (WEG) at Tyndall AFB, FL. The closest aircraft is QF-4E, serial # 72-1478. This aircraft participates in the popular USAF 'Heritage Flight' program and wears a magnificent Southeast Asia paintscheme, full colored sharksmouth and tail markings for the Commander of the 82nd ATRS. The jet is being piloted by the 82nd ATRS Commander, LtC. JD 'Bare' Lee. The second aircraft is QF-4E, serial # 74-1043 and is being piloted by Mr. Tom 'Packer' Mudge. 74-1043 wears unusual two-tone grey marking from its last unit of the 906th Fighter Wing, 704th Fighter Squadron based at Bergstrom AFB, TX. Only a few aircraft assigned to this particular unit were painted in this scheme. Both aircraft hav been returned to service after being modified into drones by BAE Systems in Mojave, CA. The jets continues to serve the AF's needs as full-scale aerial targets and will eventually be destroyed by missiles etc. while being flown by a remote operator on the ground.
